"Bookmaker Ladbrokes announced a profit fall of 10 per cent in the first four months of 2007 as big-spending gamblers made fewer telephone wagers. The betting firm also revealed that its UK retail over-the-counter business had a 'challenging' period, partly due to the success of the new FOBT rollout.

Gross win fell by 47 per cent at its phone-betting unit, although its retail gross win increased by 23 per cent in Ireland and Belgium, largely due to a strong performance from the enlarged Irish estate.

Machine gross win increased by twelve per cent while rollout of the new FOBTs was completed at the end of March and, as a result, average weekly gross has continued to improve.

Ladbrokes said it is continuing to focus on international development opportunities in both Europe and Asia, with activities in Italy the most advanced."
